It's in the category of a fading skill now, however!

Ross, the small size of New Zealand tends to smoosh everything together - the niches are so small that it's hard to survive in just one. But, as you say, it will be interesting to see where things go from here!Tim Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14856414700019368658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264914780516321436.post-62716569819179413482009-11-13T12:49:58.941+13:002009-11-13T12:49:58.941+13:00I have to say that I do agree re: awards and such ...I have to say that I do agree re: awards and such - except for the guy who one best fist book this year they seem to be pretty safe choices these days - I still have to read that one though, but from a cursory reading it looks pretty good.
OF course AUP and VUP Seem to dominate things, but indie print culture in NZ Is pretty limited anyway, and often seems to mirror the Uni Presses - aside from a couple of exceptions, indie publishing here doesn't seem to have found a niche not covered by the Uni presses, so is still operating in direct competition without the same funding. If you look at other countries the indie presses and uni presses are often publishing quite different stuff, each playing different roles. That seems to be happening a bit here with Titus, Kilmog, etc - I'm excited to see where it goes from here.Ross Brightonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04917759678804057979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264914780516321436.post-40030051776115560982009-11-12T22:54:08.117+13:002009-11-12T22:54:08.117+13:00Fascinating interview, Tim. I am aware that David Howard is not alone in his concern at the "narrowness" of current NZ poetry, at least in terms of where the accolades/ awards fall, although few are willing to "dare" saying so ...

I will now have to go read Ross's fiery reply.

PS By the way, Tim, didn't know that Russian was one of your skills.HelenLhttp://www.helenlowe.infonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264914780516321436.post-66397975666726259572009-11-12T19:36:27.701+13:002009-11-12T19:36:27.701+13:00Thanks for your response, Ross! I'll leave David to comment in detail if he wishes, but I expected that the interview would provoke a reaction, and I'm glad not to be entirely mistaken.Tim Joneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14856414700019368658noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3264914780516321436.post-68543574453729910282009-11-12T15:22:38.338+13:002009-11-12T15:22:38.338+13:00Before I finish reading, I just have to ask, re Da...Before I finish reading, I just have to ask, re David's saying of the following:
"Following New Zealand's political reorientation, our poetry has turned from British to American (rather than indigenous) models.
